REMINDER: PLAN AHEAD FOR 199/197 WORK IN DEL NORTE COUNTY. THIS WILL CAUSE HIGHWAY 199 AND HIGHWAY 197 TO BE CLOSED TO ALLOW WORK TO BE DONE.

With construction approaching along U.S. 199 and Route 197 northeast of Crescent City, plan ahead now for traffic impacts expected this summer as part of the 199/197 Safe STAA Access Highway Improvement Project.

Four-hour weekday closures are expected this summer and are planned for Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Once contractor schedules are finalized, Caltrans intends to provide advance notice before full roadway closures begin so travelers can prepare. Additional traffic control, including signal systems and flagging, will also be used throughout construction. Caltrans plans to share updates on this page at least once every two weeks, if not more often, and travelers should also continue checking QuickMap and the weekly Caltrans District 1 Road Information Bulletin before heading out.

This long-planned project will make major upgrades along the corridor to help bring portions of U.S. 199 and Route 197 up to national STAA truck standards while improving safety for all travelers. Work includes highway adjustments, bridge construction, drainage improvements, pavement work, guardrail upgrades, and slope stabilization in some areas. The project has gone through years of planning and public outreach, including formal public review opportunities and public meetings held in 2008 and 2010.
